The Venus flytrap is probably the most popular of the carnivorous plants. It is one of the active trap carnivorous plants, with its jaw trap that quickly closes on its prey. This new cultivar 'Giant Flexx' has a flamboyant red coloration inside its 'jaw'. It can reach up to 10 cm at maturity and the traps are more resistant than the common variety of Venus flytrap. The captured insects will provide nitrogen, a nutrient essential for its growth. However, after being used a few times, the traps eventually turn black and die. It is recommended to remove dead traps as you go. For this reason, avoid giving it insects; it does very well on its own. It prefers to be cramped in its pot and requires a winter rest period . The Venus flytrap does not tolerate excess minerals found in tap water at all. This excess could be fatal. It is important to water it with demineralized water, which can be purchased at the pharmacy, or with rainwater. Melted snow works very well too!
