Adenia viridiflora is a rare and sought-after caudiciform plant. It is distinguished by its thick, rounded caudex, often partially buried, which serves as a water reserve and gives it a sculptural appearance highly prized by collectors. From this caudex emerge climbing or tendrilous stems, which can lengthen and cling to a support. The leaves are generally palmate, deeply lobed, and a fresh green that contrasts beautifully with the robust, woody base of the plant. During flowering, Adenia viridiflora produces small greenish to yellowish-green flowers, discreet but elegant, hence its name viridiflora ("green-flowered"). In winter, the plant goes into dormancy: its aerial parts may dry out, and watering should then be greatly reduced.
